At Cape Cod Cellars®, we periodically come across prominent men and women in the artistic, athletic, business, and music communities and if we are lucky, spend some time with them. It’s a chance for us to step back, outside our day to day and hear what they are up to and share some wine stories.
Today we are thrilled to have Nashville based country rock star Maggie Rose as our guest. She has a new album out Have a Seat and has been touring across America including stops up north to places in Cape Cod and Newport.
Tim:
Maggie, thank you so much for being with us.
Maggie Rose:
Oh it’s my pleasure. Glad to be here.
Tim:
Apologize in advance for asking a question you have probably been asked a thousand times, but how old were you when you started singing ?
Maggie Rose:
Apparently before I could speak full sentences! I would go outside all the time and just sing. I started singing before I could play guitar and didn’t start guitar and piano until my late teens and wished I started sooner. I’m always learning and Its good to have tutors too. I am actually resuming the guitar tutelage soon.
Tim:
Do you write your own songs?
Maggie Rose:
Yes I predominantly write my owns songs as well as songs for other people, TV and film. It’s actually nice to write songs for other people and listen to them as I can get sick of myself (laughter).
Tim:
Let’s talk about your newly released album Have A Seat.
Maggie Rose:
Well, I got the opportunity to record an album at the legendary FAME Studios on Muscle Shoals, Alabama where so many talented artist’s have recorded songs, from the Allman Brothers, the Stones, Jack White. PBS just finished a documentary on it. It is part of rock and roll history. It was also nice to get out of Nashville and do nothing but eat, sleep and breathe recording day and night. We released the album in August and the response has been amazing. I have so much gratitude. People have been great and have said so many nice things. It’s rewarding when you do something that makes people happy or feel good.
Tim:
You have a fantastic voice.
Maggie Rose:
Thank you.
Tim:
Well, I am nervous chatting with you right now as your someone who gets on stage with a crowd ranging 5 to 50,000 people. Do you still get nervous?
Maggie Rose:
Oh yeah and nerves are good for you and it is a litmus test to see if you can channel it. I am just grateful to be on stage because sometimes during the pandemic, I would say to myself, gotta crush this as it might be the last show for awhile.
Tim:
How often have you been at the Grand Old Opry?
Maggie Rose:
Oh about 90 times now and it is such an honor. I stand there and I am like Dolly Parton stood here so don’t screw this up.
Tim:
How was it playing in the northeast this summer?
Maggie Rose:
Oh my god I loved it. We played at the Newport Folk festival and in Cape Cod, wonderful venues. Had a great time joining Devon Gilfillian in a Marvin Gaye Tribute at Newport Folk Fest, and he just did an album reimagining Marvin Gaye’s album “What’s Going On”.
Tim:
Talk about Salute the Songbird.
Songbird is one of my favorite Oasis songs.
Maggie Rose:
Right, who doesn’t like Oasis. Salute the Songbird was actually born during the pandemic. One of the nice things about Nashville is the opportunity to rub elbows with lots of people. OSIRIS media had an idea to do a podcast where a female host interviews other female artists and asked me.
I was like “well, I’m a woman and I know a lot of female artists, singers…. so I can do that”
Tim:
(laughter)
Maggie Rose:
Salute the Songbird shines a light on a variety of women in music from Americana and Country to rock executives, producers and more. I have had guests such as Martina McBride to Kathy Valentine of the GoGo’s to Nancy Wilson from Heart, Yola and many more.
Tim:
That’s fantastic. You are hitting the road again in December?
Maggie Rose:
Yes, we are going to some of the coldest places in December.
Tim:
(laughter)
Maggie Rose:
Birchmere in Virginia, Asbury Park in New Jersey, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, New York City, Chicago and St. Louis, Missouri where we will play at Delmar Hall on New Year’s eve.
Tim:
Wow. Ok, now a question about when you come off stage and you are relaxing, do you like wine?
Maggie Rose:
I LOVE wine and have performed in a number of vineyards. I have played a lot in and around Napa. There is something called Live in the Vineyard & Yountville Live and the hosts are these people who own vineyards like the Mondavi’s and Regusci’s and we have all become friends, it is so much fun.
Tim:
Well sounds like we have to get you to Figawi or the Nantucket Wine festival.
Maggie Rose:
Absolutely!
Tim:
Thanksgiving plans?
Maggie Rose:
It is the first break I have had this year so really looking forward to seeing my nieces and nephews. My husband is from Missouri and I am from Maryland so we trade off each year and this is my turn so we are heading up to Maryland to see extended family and I’ll be making my special cocktail, “Apple Cider Margaritas”.
Tim:
Well, Maggie, you certainly deserve to kick your feet up for a few days. Thank you so much for doing this, we really appreciate your time and have a Great Thanksgiving!
Maggie Rose:
Thank you Tim, this was great and hope you have a nice Thanksgiving as well and want to check out your Nantucket Red, Vodka Cranberry.
